Training Methodologies

PAAC training is built with intention. Our methodology is how we turn practice time into real, repeatable improvement: strong fundamentals, smart progression, and a clear link between what we do on deck and how we race. Every group follows the same core approach, scaled to age and stage, so swimmers build skill, confidence, and performance year after year.

Fundamentals Create Speed

PAAC builds speed through efficiency. We coach strong body position, clean mechanics, and reliable skills because those are what hold up when the race gets hard. Starts, turns, underwaters, finishes, pacing, and stroke timing are trained consistently across the season, not “when we have time.” Drill work is used with intent and tied directly to swimming fast, not as filler. The objective is simple: swimmers who can execute fundamentals under fatigue, because that’s what race-day performance requires.

Purposeful Training. Not Random Yards.

Every practice has a purpose, and swimmers should know what they’re working on and why it matters. Training is balanced across skill development, aerobic foundation, speed, and race-pace execution, adjusted by group level and time of season. We care about quality, not just quantity. That means smart set design, proper rest when the goal is speed, and tight technical focus when the goal is efficiency. Athletes learn to connect training to racing so improvement becomes visible and measurable.

Progression over Shortcuts

Swimmers develop in stages, and our training reflects that. Load and intensity build as athletes are ready, with an emphasis on staying healthy and improving year over year. We reinforce versatility and well-rounded development over time, while still helping swimmers grow into events that suit their strengths. Dryland, mobility, and basic durability work support what happens in the water, along with recovery habits that allow swimmers to train consistently. Consistency is the real secret weapon, and we coach in a way that protects it.

Racing is part of Development

Meets are not separate from training. They are where skills, preparation, and mindset get tested. We use racing to teach athletes how to warm up with intent, execute a plan, manage nerves, and learn from outcomes. Event choices and meet schedules are used to support development, not just chase quick times. When it’s time to perform, we plan peaking moments intentionally so swimmers can feel what it’s like to be prepared, rested, and confident. Post-race reflection is part of the cycle because the best swimmers don’t just race; they learn.

Competitive Swimming Butterfly
Platinum - Set the Standard

Platinum is the highest level of training at PAAC—the group for swimmers who treat performance as a priority. Training is typically six days per week, and swimmers are encouraged to commit not only to practice, but to the habits around it: nutrition, recovery, dryland, and being present for the full team season. 

Typical Commitment: 6 days/week, with 80%+ attendance, all dryland sessions, team events, and meet attendance required.


Entry Guideline for Platinum: 1–2 Senior Champs cuts plus coach approval.


Performance Focus: elevated technique and racing, competitive spirit, underwater excellence, and higher fitness capacity. 

Gold - Build the Edge

Gold is PAAC’s top junior group—designed for advanced age-group swimmers (often ages 11–14) who are ready to train and race with higher expectations. This is where talent becomes consistency: swimmers are pushed to sharpen technique, build fitness, strengthen underwaters, and develop the competitive mindset needed to step into senior-level training. 

Typical Commitment: encouraged 5 days/week, with an expectation of 80%+ attendance, dryland participation, team events, and meet attendance. 


Entry Guideline for Gold: typically 5–6 11/12 Junior Championship time standards plus coach approval.

 
Move-up Note: Lead Gold Coach + Head Program Coach make the final decision on promotion to the Platinum group.

Silver - Perfect the Form

Silver is where swimmers become more complete athletes—refining stroke technique while building the endurance and racing IQ needed for the next level. This group includes top 9-year-olds and swimmers roughly ages 10–14, with an emphasis on consistency, event versatility, and learning how to train with purpose. 

Key Readiness Goals for Silver: 100 yards of each stroke, progress through IMX events, stronger starts/turns, underwater kicking, and confident use of the pace clock. 


Typical Commitment: encouraged 4–5 practices/week; meet participation encouraged.

Bronze - Learn to Compete

Bronze is the first true competitive training group at PAAC—where swimmers start to connect technique to racing. While age is often 8–11, placement is based on skill and readiness. Practices introduce training structure, racing basics, and the early discipline of being part of a team season. 

Key Readiness Goals for Bronze: complete a 100 IM and 200 Free without stopping, swim 50 yards of each stroke confidently, and begin underwater kicking and pace clock awareness. Swimmers must possess the maturity and confidence to take their training to the next level. 


Typical Commitment: encouraged 3–4 practices/week; meet participation encouraged.

STARS - Master the Basics

STARS stands for Starts, Turns, And Racing Strokes—and that’s exactly what this group is about. Swimmers learn the skills that turn “swimming” into “racing” in a supportive environment that prepares them for meets with confidence. Meets are available, but competition isn’t required—progress is measured in skill mastery and readiness. The age for STARS swimmers will start no younger than 5.

Seahorse - Discover the Water

Seahorse is where a swimmer’s competitive journey begins. This group is a warm, confidence-building entry point focused on the fundamentals of competitive swimming—body position, basic stroke development, and safe, efficient movement in the water—so swimmers gain the tools they need to graduate into STARS and thrive long-term at PAAC.
